The Temporary Wife is a contemporary mail-order bride story.
Chet learns that his dying mother wishes he were ‘settled.’ While he decided long ago that he would never marry, what would be the harm of putting on a sham marriage to bring joy to his mother in her last days? Chet devises a plan, and soon becomes singularly focused on its execution.
Halfway across the country, Abby is a woman down on her luck. She’s particularly unhappy that she hasn’t been able to afford returning to college to finish her education. Upon seeing an ‘in search of’ notice for a ‘temporary wife,’ Abby is intrigued. Although it’s a most bizarre job posting, the money is good. And an easy way to earn the funds she needs for school.
After much discussion on how this ruse would play out, Chet and Abby strike a deal. It’s a simple business arrangement for their mutual benefit. But this seemingly straightforward agreement turns complicated as ‘business’ gives way to deeper feelings that threaten to ruin them both.
